How to remove metadata from a photo

  1. Add your image. Drop or choose a JPG, PNG or WebP file.
  2. Set the output quality. Review the dimensions and choose a JPEG output quality.
  3. Download the clean copy. Select "Remove metadata & download."

What happens to your image

The image is re-encoded from a canvas locally in your browser. This strips EXIF, camera and GPS metadata because re-encoding through canvas never carries that metadata forward. Nothing is uploaded to OpenToolkit.

Common reasons to strip metadata

  • Remove GPS coordinates from a photo before posting it publicly.
  • Clear camera and device metadata before sharing an image with a stranger.
  • Shrink a photo's file size while clearing hidden metadata at the same time.
  • Sanitize a screenshot or photo before it goes into a public-facing document.

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. It's re-encoded locally in your browser tab.

Why is the output always JPEG?

Re-encoding to JPEG is what strips the metadata, even if you started with PNG or WebP — note that transparent areas won't remain transparent in the JPEG output.

Does this remove all metadata, or just GPS?

It removes EXIF metadata broadly, including camera info and GPS, because canvas re-encoding drops the entire embedded metadata block rather than editing specific fields.

How can I verify it worked?

Check the downloaded file's properties in your OS or photo app — the re-encoded JPEG carries no original EXIF block.

What does the quality setting affect?

Lower quality shrinks the file further at some cost to visual fidelity; higher quality stays closer to the original look.
