Hash Generator
Compute SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 checksums with the Web Crypto API — locally, no network.
How to generate a hash
- Pick an algorithm. Choose SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 or SHA-512.
- Enter your text. Type or paste it in.
- Copy the digest. The hex digest updates live as you type — click "Copy digest" when you're done.
What happens to your text
Hashing is computed with the browser's native Web Crypto API (crypto.subtle.digest), running entirely on your device. Your text is never sent to OpenToolkit or any server.
What this generator supports
Common reasons to hash text
- Verify two pieces of text are byte-for-byte identical.
- Check a piece of text against a published checksum.
- Generate a deterministic identifier or cache key from a string.
- See what a given input hashes to while debugging a checksum mismatch.
Frequently asked questions
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. Hashing runs locally via the Web Crypto API in your browser tab.
Can I hash a file instead of text?
Not currently — this tool hashes typed or pasted text only.
Which algorithm should I use?
SHA-256 is a solid modern default. SHA-1 is included mainly for compatibility with older systems and isn't considered collision-resistant for security-sensitive use.
Is this suitable for storing passwords?
No. General-purpose hashes like SHA-256 aren't a substitute for a slow, salted password hash such as bcrypt or Argon2 — this tool is for checksums and general hashing.
Does whitespace affect the result?
Yes — hashing is exact. Any change to the input, including a trailing space or line break, produces a completely different digest.
